Dydd Santes Dwynwen, or St. Dwynwen’s Day, is January the 25th. This is the Welsh’s equivalent to St. Valentine’s Day. In more recent years this day has been celebrated more and more by young lovers in Wales.
Fifth Century legend has it that Dwynwen, a shy young Welsh girl fell in love with Maelon Daffodrill. Her father did not approve and sadly, after some misdeeds towards Dwynwen, Maelon left. Dwynwen was distraught and in her despair an angel came to her and granted her three wishes. Her wishes came true – her last one being that she would never marry. As a nun she founded a church and it attracted pilgrimages. Young lovers went to seek blessings for their future together.
Today the Welsh love spoon is a token of love and is given to a loved one to honor their future together. This sterling silver love spoon, designed by Sea Gems, features a trinity knot and makes a perfect gift for your beloved. The pendant is available in several chain lengths.
